My grandfather built a special device for my mom to get around on while she receovered from her procedures. He took up all the rugs in the house and made little ramps for the single stairs.
Pelvic x-ray , 1978
This is my mom's pelvic x-ray in 1978, before the first of her six hip replacements. Notice how uneven the sockets are and the slant of her pelvis.
Second spike and socket
This second, longer spike was in my mother's body from 1984-1987. After it was removed, the doctor gave it to my mother as a souvenir. I would play with it as a child, holding the ball in my hand and letting the blade protrude between my fingers like a talon.
